The Heartbeat of Zanchieta: Where It All Began
Every sanctuary has a foundation, but Zanchieta was built on a promise to two caracal cubs who almost didn’t make it.
The story begins with a choice. When the previous owners decided to euthanize two orphaned caracal babies after their mother passed—simply because they weren't prepared for the intensive, round-the-clock labor of hand-rearing—Lizette, our founder, stepped in. She didn't just save them; she changed the course of their lives entirely.
She didn't just buy a home for them; she bought a future. Lizette undertook the massive mission of acquiring land, designing and building specialized caracal-appropriate enclosures, and navigating the complex legal landscape of wildlife permits from the ground up to ensure these two survivors had a permanent, safe haven.
The Meaning Behind the Name Zanchieta isn't just a label; it’s a tribute to the gift of life and the movement of nature:
- Zani: Derived from the meaning "Gift from God."
- Ghita: Representing the "Dance" of life and growth.
From that singular act of defiance against the odds, Zanchieta grew into what you see today:
a sanctuary defined by dedication, expertise in wildlife rescue, and a refusal to give up on those who need us most.
